In this study 138,976 records of live weight between 60 to 610 days of age, from 27,327 Nellore cattle breed, from herds in Mato Grosso State were used in order to describe the genetic variability and to estimate genetic parameters for the live weight at different ages, using random regression models. The model included the fixed effects of contemporary group and age of cow at calving as covariate, random effects of direct additive genetic, maternal genetic, animal and maternal permanent environmental and temporary environment effect. The most appropriate random regression model employed the covariance function with fourth order polynomials to describe the variability of all effects and two residual variance classes. Estimates of direct additive genetic variance and animal permanent environment increased with the age of the animals. Maternal genetic variances and maternal permanent environment exhibited similar behavior, with higher values in pre weaning. The estimated heritability coefficients ranged from 0.25 to 0.43, with higher values at older ages in the growth trajectory of the animals. These results showed the presence of sufficient genetic variability to obtain significant genetic gain through selection, especially after weaning. The results for the direct additive genetic correlation exhibited low correlations between weights in initial and final ages, however, highly correlated weights between nearest ages. Genetic correlation estimates between weaning with weights up to 610 days of age were high and positive and indicate that most of the genes responsible for higher weights in this period are the same.

RESUMEN

The Tabapuã breed is a beef cattle Brazilian breed known for its sexual precocity and desirable characteristics for tropical conditions. However, this is a newly formed breed and few studies have been conducted regarding genetic parameters and genetic trends for its reproductive traits. The objective of the present study was to estimate the genetic parameters, genetic trends, and relative selection efficiency for weaning weight adjusted to 210 d of age (W210), age at first calving (AFC), average calving interval (ACI), first calving interval (CI1), and accumulated productivity (ACP) among Tabapuã beef cattle. Pedigree data on 15,241 Tabapuã animals born between 1958 and 2011 and phenotype records from 7,340 cows born between 1970 and 2011 were supplied by the National Association of Breeders and Researchers (Associação Nacional de Criadores e Pesquisadores). Analysis through the least squares method assisted in defining the fixed effects that were considered within the models. The estimates for the genetic parameters were obtained through the REML, using a multitrait animal model. The likelihood ratio test applied for W210 was significant ( < 0.05) for the inclusion of maternal additive genetic and permanent environmental effects in the model. Genetic trends were calculated through linear regression of the EBV of the animals, according to the year of birth. The heritability estimates obtained ranged from 0.04 ± 0.03 for CI1 to 0.25 ± 0.05 for W210. The genetic correlations ranged from 0.004 ± 0.19 for W210-AFC and 0.93 ± 0.12 for ACI-CI1. The genetic trend was significant ( < 0.05) and favorable for CI1 and the maternal genetic effect of W210 and was significant ( < 0.05) and unfavorable for AFC, ACI, and ACP. The ACP could be used in the selection index to assist the breeding goal of improved productive and reproductive performance. The genetic trends indicated small and unfavorable genetic changes for AFC, ACI, and ACP in light of the recent implementation of a genetic breeding program for this breed.

RESUMEN

In most studies on beef cattle longevity, only the cows reaching a given number of calvings by a specific age are considered in the analyses. With the aim of evaluating all cows with productive life in herds, taking into consideration the different forms of management on each farm, it was proposed to measure cow longevity from age at last calving (ALC), that is, the most recent calving registered in the files. The objective was to characterize this trait in order to study the longevity of Nellore cattle, using the Kaplan-Meier estimators and the Cox model. The covariables and class effects considered in the models were age at first calving (AFC), year and season of birth of the cow and farm. The variable studied (ALC) was classified as presenting complete information (uncensored = 1) or incomplete information (censored = 0), using the criterion of the difference between the date of each cow's last calving and the date of the latest calving at each farm. If this difference was >36 months, the cow was considered to have failed. If not, this cow was censored, thus indicating that future calving remained possible for this cow. The records of 11 791 animals from 22 farms within the Nellore Breed Genetic Improvement Program ('Nellore Brazil') were used. In the estimation process using the Kaplan-Meier model, the variable of AFC was classified into three age groups. In individual analyses, the log-rank test and the Wilcoxon test in the Kaplan-Meier model showed that all covariables and class effects had significant effects (P < 0.05) on ALC. In the analysis considering all covariables and class effects, using the Wald test in the Cox model, only the season of birth of the cow was not significant for ALC (P > 0.05). This analysis indicated that each month added to AFC diminished the risk of the cow's failure in the herd by 2%. Nonetheless, this does not imply that animals with younger AFC had less profitability. Cows with greater numbers of calvings were more precocious than those with fewer calvings.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the genetic correlations among real-time ultrasound carcass, BW, and scrotal circumference (SC) traits in Nelore cattle. Carcass traits, measured by real-time ultrasound of the live animal, were recorded from 2002 to 2004 on 10 farms across 6 Brazilian states on 2,590 males and females ranging in age from 450 to 599 d. Ultrasound records of LM area (LMA) and backfat thickness (BF) were obtained from cross-sectional images between the 12th and 13th ribs, and rump fat thickness (RF) was measured between the hook and pin bones over the junction between gluteus medius and biceps femoris muscles. Also, BW (n = 22,778) and SC (n = 5,695) were recorded on animals born between 1998 and 2003. The BW traits were 120, 210, 365, 450, and 550-d standardized BW (W120, W210, W365, W450, and W550), plus BW (WS) and hip height (HH) on the ultrasound scanning date. The SC traits were 365-, 450-, and 550-d standardized SC (SC365, SC450, and SC550). For the BW and SC traits, the database used was from the Nelore Breeding Program-Nelore Brazil. The genetic parameters were estimated with multivariate animal models and REML. Estimated genetic correlations between LMA and other traits were 0.06 (BF), -0.04 (RF), 0.05 (HH), 0.58 (WS), 0.53 (W120), 0.62 (W210), 0.67 (W365), 0.64 (W450 and W550), 0.28 (SC365), 0.24 (SC450), and 0.00 (SC550). Estimated genetic correlations between BF and with other traits were 0.74 (RF), -0.32 (HH), 0.19 (WS), -0.03 (W120), -0.10 (W210), 0.04 (W365), 0.01 (W450), 0.06 (W550), 0.17 (SC365 and SC450), and -0.19 (SC550). Estimated genetic correlations between RF and other traits were -0.41 (HH), -0.09 (WS), -0.13 (W120), -0.09 (W210), -0.01 (W365), 0.02 (W450), 0.03 (W550), 0.05 (SC365), 0.11 (SC450), and -0.18 (SC550). These estimates indicate that selection for carcass traits measured by real-time ultrasound should not cause antagonism in the genetic improvement of SC and BW traits. Also, selection to increase HH might decrease subcutaneous fat as correlated response. Therefore, to obtain animals suited to specific tropical production systems, carcass, BW, and SC traits should be considered in selection programs.

RESUMEN

Summary Age at first calving (AFC) measures the entry of heifers into the beef cattle production system. This trait can be used as a selection criterion for earlier reproductive performance. Using data from Nelore cattle participating in the 'Program for Genetic Improvement of the Nelore Breed' (PMGRN-Nelore Brazil), bi-trait analyses were performed using the restricted maximum likelihood method, based on an AFC animal model and the following traits: female body weight adjusted to 365 (BW365) and 450 (BW450) days of age, and male scrotal circumference adjusted to 365 (SC365), 450 (SC450), 550 (SC550) and 730 (SC730) days of age. The heritability estimates for AFC ranged from 0.02 +/- 0.02 to 0.04 +/- 0.02. The estimates of additive direct heritabilities (with standard error) for BW365, BW450, SC365, SC450, SC550 and SC730 were 0.36 +/- 0.07, 0.38 +/- 0.07, 0.48 +/- 0.07, 0.65 +/- 0.07, 0.64 +/- 0.07 and 0.42 +/- 0.07, respectively, and the genetic correlations with AFC were -0.38, -0.33, 0.10, -0.13, -0.13 and 0.06, respectively. In the herds studied, selection for SC365, SC450, SC550 or SC730 should not cause genetic changes in AFC. Selection based on BW365 or BW450 would favor smaller AFC breeding values. However, the low magnitude of direct heritability estimates for AFC in these farms indicates that changes in phenotypical expression depend mostly on non-genetic factors.

The genetic correlations between visual scores and reproductive traits, using the bayesian statistic under the linear-threshold animal model, in bovines of the Nelore breed were estimated. Categorical morphological traits were also evaluated at eight, 15, and 22 month-old, concerning musculature, physical structure, conformation and sacrum, the escrotal circumferences measured at the ages of 365 and 450-day-old, and the age at first calving. The estimates of genetic correlations were moderates, suggesting that the selection of animals with better morphological conformation may lead to animals more precocious and with greater fertility. The estimates of genetic correlation concerning the escrotal circumference at 450 day-old and the age at first calving with the evaluated visual scores at 22 month-old were higher than the ones obtained between visual scores at eight and 15 month-old. The use of these visual scores as a criterion of selection may also bring genetic progress to the reproductive traits.

Genetic parameters were estimated for body weight and real-time ultra-sound loin-eye area, rump fat thickness, and back fat thickness using data from 1,325 yearling Guzera cattle (90.4 percent bulls and 9.6 percent heifers) and pedigree structure with 6,642 animals. Variance and covariance components were estimated using REML methodology and MTDFREML software. Single trait animal models were used to estimate repeatability and heritability for the four traits. Multiple traits animal models were used to estimate genetic correlations among the traits. Repeatability estimates (standard errors) were 0.44(0.10) for body weight, 0.39(0.10) for loin-eye area, 0.75(0.06) for rump fat thickness, and 0.49(0.08) for back fat thickness. Heritability estimates were 0.42(0.11) and 0.41(0.11) for body weight, 0.35(0.09) and 0.34(0.09) for loin-eye area, 0.20(0.08) and 0.32(0.08) for back fat thickness, and 0.05(0.06) and 0.10(0.08) for rump fat thickness, respectively from single and multiple traits models. Genetic correlation estimates were 0.79(0.09) between body weight and loin-eye area, 0.20(0.08) between body weight and back fat thickness, 0.05(0.06) between loin-eye area and rump fat thickness, 0.02(0.27) between loin-eye area and back fat thickness and 0.64(0.22) between the two measurements of fat thickness. In order to evaluate carcass traits, results suggested that repeated real-time ultra-sound measurements are not needed and that direct selection for these traits might be effective. In addition, there is no genetic antagonism between selection for body weight and carcass traits.

RESUMEN

Heritability estimates and genetic correlations were obtained for body weight and scrotal circumference, adjusted, respectively, to 12 (BW12 and SC12) and 18 (BW18 and SC18) months of age, for 10 742 male Nellore cattle. The adjustments to SC12 and SC18 were made using a nonlinear logistic function, while BW12 and BW18 were obtained by linear adjustment. The contemporary groups (CGs) were defined from animals born on the same farm, in the same year and birth season. The mean heritability estimates obtained using the restricted maximum likelihood method in bi-trait analysis were 0.25, 0.25, 0.29 and 0.42 for BW12, BW18, SC12 and SC18, respectively. The genetic correlations were 0.30 ± 0.11, 0.21 ± 0.13, 0.21 ± 0.11, -0.08 ± 0.15, 0.16 ± 0.12 and 0.89 ± 0.04 between the traits BW12 and BW18; BW12 and SC12; BW12 and SC18; BW18 and SC12; BW18 and SC18; and SC12 and SC18. The heritability for SC18 was considerably greater than for SC12, suggesting that this should be included as a selection criterion. The genetic correlation between BW18 and SC12 was close to zero, indicating that these traits did not influence each other. The contrary occurred between SC12 and SC18, indicating that selection using one of these could alter the other. Because of the mean magnitudes of heritabilities in the various measurements of weight and scrotal perimeter, it is suggested that the practice of individual selection for these traits is possible.

The data set is from 234 Nelore bulls which participate of a progeny test in the period from 1996 to 2003. The expected progeny diference (EPDs) of seven economic traits, weights at 120 e 210 days of age, maternal effect (DMPP120 and DMPP210), weights and scrotal circumferences at 365 e 450 days of age, direct effects (DDP365, DDP450, DDPE365 and DDPE450), and age at first calving (DDIPP), were used in order to classify these animals in three groups and verify which EPDs showed greatest discriminating power in forming the groups. The statistical applied techniques were: k-means clusters analysis and principal components analysis. From the three groups formed, two of them stood out in relation to values of the EPDs means. Evidence of the importance of these two groups was observed in the principal component analysis that associate to them higher values of direct EPDs of weight and scrotal circumference. The two first principal components accounted for 70.22 percent of the total original variability. Both techniques could be an important tools to sire classification, variable discrimination, as well as to resume multivariate information, and they could be applied to help selection in animal breeding program.

RESUMEN

Parameters based on the probability of gene origin were used to describe genetic variability in three reproductive groups from the Breeding Program for Nellore Cattle (PMGRN). The three reproductive populations (cows in reproductive age, bulls from artificial insemination centers and young bulls in progeny test) generated medium to low values. The effective number of founders (Nf ), the effective number of ancestors (Na) and the remaining genomes (Ng) suggest low founder representativeness, high genetic contribution by some ancestors, considerable loss of founder alleles and lack of allelic representativeness in bulls kept in artificial insemination centers and young sires in progeny test in relation to the diversity on the farms participating in the PMGRN. The parameters based on the probability of gene origin in the three reproductive groups were: 84.3, 53 and 54.2 (Nf ); 71, 36.6 and 30 (Na) and 51.4, 19.3 and 19 (Ng) for cows, bulls from artificial insemination centers and young sires in progeny test, respectively. Future matings and the introduction of selected progeny reproduction may decrease the parameters based on the probability of gene origin in each reproductive group, thereby increasing considerably the additive relationship in the three reproductive groups and consequently increasing the probability of inbreeding in the future. Strategies to maintain genetic variability in bull populations must be implemented.
